Practical Nursing Program (Alton Campus) - Program Overview
Program Description: The Practical Nursing program provides students with the opportunity to develop
knowledge and skills necessary to function as a practical nurse within the scope of practice in hospitals,
nursing homes, skilled extended care and rehabilitative facilities, clinics, schools, group homes, and
similar institutions. The program integrates classroom instruction, laboratory practice and clinical
experience to give students the necessary knowledge and skill base to prepare for the National Council
Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN ®).
Program Schedule: CALC's Practical Nursing program is a 16-month program requiring attendance full-time, 30 hours per week
from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Thursday. For clinical experiences, the student needs to be available 24/7 during the program.
Application Process:
- Meet or exceed all application requirements* (see below)
- Attend General Information Session
- Submit an application to the practical nursing program: including transcripts and reference by the announced deadline. Application packets
will only be available at the conclusion of the information sessions
- Register for and take the TEAS® Entrance Exam
- Undergo a personal interview and complete student file: includes background checks, physical examination, drug screening,
and receiving any necessary immunizations prior to starting the program
* Requirements to apply to the Practical Nursing Program
- Must attend a MANDATORY information session
- 18 years of age or older
- Proof of High School Diploma or GED
- Must be an Illinois Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) currently on the registry and in good standing
- Must have a current American Heart Association CPR certification for the Healthcare Provider before the first day
of class
